[PHOTOSTORY 2: MOTION] Tennis: A Dog's Favorite Sport

 Tennis: A Dog's Favorite Sport

By: Erin Chambers
Senior exercise science major, Diego Castro-Diaz, takes the tennis court to practice his serving. Castro-Diaz's favorite time to play is at sunrise or sunset.

Castro-Diaz's pet Labradoodle, Harriet, accompanies him at the tennis court. Like most dogs, she loves a bouncy tennis ball.

Harriet keeps her eyes on the tennis balls as Castro-Diaz prepares to serve. For Harriet, tennis is just an intense game of fetch.

Castro-Diaz prepares to serve. He learned tennis from his older sister, a collegiate tennis player.

Diego Castro-Diaz takes his first serve of the evening. He started playing tennis at the beginning of quarantine last March.

Castro-Diaz serving once again. He comes to the courts every day to meet the recommended daily amount of physical activity.

He prepares to serve once again. The Georgia Southern student exclusively uses the student tennis courts near Hanner Fieldhouse.

Harriet brings Castro-Diaz back a tennis ball from the other side of the court. He refers to her as his 'ball girl'.

Harriet stashing a tennis ball from her owner. Castro-Diaz confirmed that tennis balls, are in fact, her favorite toy.

Harriet attempts to catch a tennis ball. It was a miss.

Harriet brings the ball back to the court. This is where typically returns the ball.

The one-year-old Labradoodle waits for her owner to start serving again. Castro-Diaz said that she loves the tennis courts even more than the local dog park.

Castro-Diaz switches sides of the court. This is so he doesn't start to favor one side of the court over the other.

Diego Castro-Diaz makes his first serve on this side of the court.

Castro-Diaz winds up his serve to hit the ball. He prefers this method of serving.

Castro-Diaz pivots towards the court, hitting the ball.

A tired Harriet greets her owner. She's been slower to retrieve the tennis balls after bursts of intense running.

The pair pick up tennis balls together. It's a race to see who gets one first.

Both tired now, the pair runs back after picking up some of the stray balls.

The pair get ready to end their time at the courts. Although, they'll be back tomorrow.

[PHOTOSTORY 2: MOTION] Memorial Day Beach Crowds

By: Isabel Padilla

Tybee Island Memorial Day weekend crowds lounging at the beach by the pier. Black umbrellas pictured are rented at local hotel establishments and places nearby.

Seagulls walking on the beach. The tide had reached its highest peak around 10:30 am and has begun going back out.

People play paddle ball on Tybee Island. Hotels and restaurants are around the beachfront closest to the pier.
Julie Rasmussen plays paddle ball and swings for the ball. Julie is on vacation.

Julie watches as the ball flies to her partner. She and her husband traveled from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to road trip down the states.

Brian Rasmussen, husband of Julie, makes his serve on the ball. The couple went to the beach at Hilton Head, SC earlier this week.

Julie leans to get her shot at the ball as Brian watches. The days temperatures reached 87 degrees on Tybee Island.

Brian hits the ball back. Brian and Julie went on a trolley tour the day before in downtown Savannah, Ga.

The ball flies to Julie and Brian watches its path. The couple have visited many places recently including: Charleston, SC; Charolette, NC; and Blue Ridge, Ga.

Julie uses the paddle to finish the round off. Tybee Island is one of the nearest beaches surrounding Savannah.

Brian lunges forward and quickly paddles the ball before it hits the ground. Memorial Day Weekend is one of the busiest times of the year due to tourist crowds.

Julie jumps to paddle the ball. The beaches around the area not including Tybee Island are Jekyll Island and Hilton Head in South Carolina.

The ball rolled behind Julie and she walks to retrieve it. Tybee Island is a barrier island and has a still operational 18th century lighthouse.
Local, Margot Smith, holds her boogie board to enjoy the water. People walking by informed her a shark was spotted farther out.

Margot dives towards a wave. Margot has lived in Savannah for three years.

The wave gets closer to Margot as she kicks towards it. She moved to Savannah, Ga from Chicago.

Margot splashes and gets submerged into the ocean. Margot worked at Disney and after living in Florida she came to Savannah and worked on the Ghost Tours.
The wave crashes and knocks Margot off the board. The Ghost Tours are one of the top activities that tourist do in Savannah.

The boogie board lays on the beach. Tybee Island parking lots are all "pay to park" some local food and beverage establishments offer free parking space but it is limited.

Crashing waves fall as low tide approaches. Tybee Island has a Marine Science Center where volunteers supervise baby sea turtles as they make their way to the ocean during May (sea turtle nesting season).
