[PHOTO STORY 2: MOTION] Great Day for Some Lacrosse

 

Senior Conlan Petersen gets stretched out before his game against Marblehead. This is Winthrop's tenth game of the season, they come into today's contest at 1-9. 


Sophomore Mike Chaves prepares to participate in the pre-game drills. "What I like a lot about this team is how they embraced me. Lacrosse isn't my first sport but everyone here welcomed me with open arms." - Mike Chaves 

Senior Captain Matt Hurley awaits the Marblehead Captain's call for the coin toss. Matt Hurley has been a three year starter for the Winthrop Vikings. 

Coaches Rich Cifuni and Jeff Parsons talk strategy as their team practices an inter-squad scrimmage. Jeff Parsons has who also teaches at Winthrop High School has volunteered his time coaching for the last five years. 



Mike Chaves plays defense on a Marblehead attackman at the start of the game. Marblehead comes into today's game atop the North Eastern Conference. 

Marblehead midfielder blazes by the outstretched stick of Mike Chaves trying to clear the ball. In the game of lacrosse the team looking to advance the ball onto opposing territory only has a limited amount of time to do so. 

Robert Rich catches a pass from Senior Stevie Perullo. Quick ball movement is a point of emphasis for the Viking offense. 

Robert Rich sprints down the sideline looking for an open teammate. "We don't have the best record in our league but we enjoy coming out to compete." - Robert Rich

Senior Stevie Perullo takes a sip of Gatorade as he comes off the field. Something that is a rare sight for the physically gifted mid-fielder. 

Robert rich trots off the sideline as a teammate awaits off the screen to get substituted in. Lacrosse is very similar to hockey as players are constantly coming on and off the field. 

Senior James Silva steals the ball and tries to find a passing lane to clear the ball. "We didn't get to play at all last year because of COVID so to even get out and play a sport my final year o means a lot to me." - James Silva

Seniors Stevie Perullo and Matt Hurley look to their coach for halftime adjustments. Getting to take off the helmet and rest up around head coach Brian Donnelly is the second intermission standard. 

Senior Ryan Hovermale listens intently to his coaches while talking about what needs to be done on the defensive side of the ball. Hovermale hopes to be selected to the North Eastern Conference all star squad after the season. 



Senior Conlan Pedersen begins to put on his helmet and get ready for the second half of play. "The brotherhood we have here is awesome. I have made so many friendships and memories through my time playing." - Conlan Pedersen 



Marblehead attackman leaps for the shot. This shot would put Marblehead up four goals to one. 

A player for Marblehead runs to try and get a quick counter-attack started. To play lacrosse a high level of conditioning must be had as the sport moves fast from either end of the field. 

Knuckle touches all around. A Marblehead attackman gets to celebrate with his teammate after scoring his second goal of the game. 

Number 5 for Marblehead loads up to shoot. This is an unusual occurrence as players with six foot sticks generally are not considered to be offensive threats.  



Junior Ricky Rosado looks to his team as there is a short break in the play. Rosado is hailed to be the fastest player on the Vikings team. 

Always room for improvement. Head Coach Brian Donnelly addresses his team after a 13-3 loss dropping the team to 1-10 on the season.
