The main entrance of Terry Allen's store "For the Birds". He opened up the store four years ago with his wife with a passion for birds.
Terry's dog Waylon waits by the door for a customer to greet. "Waylon is the first face you see when you walk in the door...he greets everyone."
Terry is demonstrating how the artist that made this birdhouse he sells makes it look like a hole in a tree so blue birds are attracted to them. Terry uses local artists around Salem, SC to fill spots in his store.
Terry keeps all of his customer's orders for his special birdseed in these organized binders. Terry sells this seed to customers every day and has his own blend that he has created.
Terry is explaining his reward system. Every time you spot a new bird and name them and get to a highlighted spot on the list you can come in and redeem it for a prize.
Terry shows the cool things around his store. "My goal is to spread the name of my store through word of mouth. I want people to come in here and leave with something to talk about."
Terry shows the chart he uses to show customers the quality of his birdseed. The chart shows what is in his birdseed with the stars next to the graph.
Terry is showing his customer Mark Jones the graph to explain the quality of the birdseed to him before he purchases it. Terry uses this on a daily basis to explain why his seed is better than other main brands.
Jim Wanaselja one of Terry's regular customers is looking for a solution for birds running into his windows. "Terry always had everything I need and is so kind-hearted. "
Terry gives him some pictures of animals to put up in his windows to ward off the birds. Terry likes to help his friends and gave him some other stuff to take home and try and they can come back and pay for it if it works.
Terry and Jim talk more about birds and catch up with each other. Terry said "I have a lot of people that come up here that I know and maintain relationships with. Some have become my close friends."
Terry displays some of his inventions in his store also. He started off his business with this invention and gets orders off of amazon and sells them in his store.
There is local art on the wall along with many different types of bird feeders. When customers come in to buy a feeder Terry will walk them through the process of which one to get and how to get the birds to eat out of your feeder.
Terry takes a phone call from a customer. He often takes calls answering question and taking orders.
Terry talks to Mark Jones about the bird seed he is buying. Terry sells his seed in buckets and his customers by the bucket the first time and then just bring it back to refill after. Terry is checking out Mark. Terry uses a iPad to check out his customer and uses it for a live slideshow of photos when no one is checking out.
Mark leaves the store with a bucket of birdseed in his hand. "Thank you! Can't wait to surprise my wife." Terry shows is storage shed in the back of his store. He sells 2,000 lbs of bird seed a week!This is the sign that For the Birds has on the main street. For the Birds is easy to see with the art Terry has in the front and the sign.
