[PHOTOSTORY 4: STRUGGLE] Journey to the 1,000 Pound Club

The sun shines outside of the Axis Student Living gym, in Statesboro, Georgia. Axis Student Living is one of many apartments available for students at Georgia Southern University.



Michael McFarland does reps on the Pec Fly machine in the Axis Student Living gym. McFarland is trying to join the 1,000 Pound Club, the goal of this club is to get your max bench, dead lift and squat to equal a 1,000 pounds.

Michael McFarland looks down while bracing himself to perform reps on the Pec Fly machine. McFarland recently graduated from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelors in International Studies.

Michael McFarland gets on the ground and performs archer push ups. Archer push ups help to strengthen the chest and tricep muscles, which could be beneficiary when trying to max out your bench.

Disposable mask and social distancing signs sit in the Axis Student Living gym. The Axis Student Living gym is now open for 24 hours a day, giving Michael McFarland the chance to pursue his goal at any time of the day.

Michael McFarland adjust the seating on the bench. While McFarland wants to join the 1,000 Pound Club, he also wants to be a physical trainer, when asked why he said, "I love helping people."

Michael McFarland grabs dumbbells from the rack. The dumbbells on the rack are organized from the lowest to highest weight.

Michael McFarland performs frontal raises. Frontal Raises work out the upper chest and shoulder muscles, these muscle groups are also worked out during the bench press, a portion of the 1,000 Pound Club exercises.

Michael McFarland performs the military press. The military press works out the shoulder muscles, as well as other muscle groups such as triceps, these same muscle groups are used during the deadlift, another portion of the 1,000 Pound Club exercises.

Michael McFarland opens a bottle of Gatorade. Gatorade helps to replenish electrolytes, valuable minerals that are much needed during physical training.

Michael McFarland, carries the dumbbells to a different area. Along with trying to become a physical trainer, McFarland mentioned that he is trying to become a certified dietitian as well.

Michael McFarland performs face pulls. Face pulls help to stabilize the shoulder muscles.

Michael McFarland changes the weight on the exercise machine. McFarland is not the only person looking to join the 1,000 Pound Club, since it is a goal for many workout enthusiasts.

Michael McFarland performs face pulls. McFarland mentioned that another one of his personal goals is to speak 5 different languages, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic and French.

Michael McFarland grabs dumbbells on the floor. The brand of dumbbells McFarland is about to use is called ZIVA, some of the other exercise equipment in the gym is the same brand, such as the weight plates.


Michael McFarland performs shoulder shrugs. Shoulder shrugs, as the name suggests, workout the shoulder muscles.

Michael McFarland puts the dumbbells back on the rack. Along with trying to join the 1,000 Pound Club, McFarland also wants to run 3 miles in 18 minutes.

Michael McFarland catches his breath after his workout. McFarland exited the gym not too long after this photo, one step closer to reaching his goal of joining the 1,000 Pound Club.
