[PHOTOSTORY 4: STRUGGLE] Not enough workers in retail stores

 By: Davon Johnson

The Dollar General, located on 624 Fair Rd, along with many other retailer stores struggle to keep workers. There is help wanted signs for retailers, and people are not applying.
The outside of the store's products fall over, and no one is cleaning it up. This is a problem with many dollar stores.

Store manager, Centrella Miller, works in the store by herself. Some days she has to close the store down early because no one wants to come to work.

A roll tanner of freight in the middle of the store is blocking customers from shopping. Many of these are floating around the Dollar General stores, and people are not getting everything they came into the store to get.

A U-boat full of products waits to get worked. "Whoever works the register normally works the totes, but with no help, it is hard to get to everything," said Centrella.

The shelves are empty or many sauces and canned beans. With only one person working the store, it is impossible to get products out for the customers to buy.

Centrella checks the price of lotion for a customer because it was in the wrong spot. "Customers put items in the wrong place all the time, but with few employees, it's a struggle cleaning up all the mess."

Jessica Brown looks at the price machine to make sure everything comes to the right price. Many customers get frustrated to see items be higher on the shelf than what they originally thought.

Jessica Brown gets her pocketbook out and is ready to pay for her groceries. "I know these dollar stores do not have enough help, but I like to make sure I am not overpaying for anything I get," Brown said.

The laundry aisle only has a few items to choose from. The products will not be put on the shelf until tomorrow morning.

Miscellaneous items cover the back of this end-cap. These areas of the store get neglected a lot by customers and employees.

The toy section is unorganized. "This is probably the hardest area of the store to recover and clean up because kids have a field day in this section," said Centrella.

Jim Foster shops for some paper towels at his favorite dollar store. "I know the store is not in the best condition, but I still love the deals I get at this place."

Centrella goes over a receipt with a customer. "We have deals all the time, but sometimes customers do not understand the discounts, so I have to explain it to them."

Centrella waits while a customer counts their money. This happens often, and sometimes it can create a long line.

Centrella goes to the save to get change for a huge bill. "We have to go to the bank often for change because we can run through them quickly, but today we did not have that problem."

Sophia Davis waits in line while the register is being unattended. There are times when cashiers have to leave the register to help other customers because no one else is working.

Plenty of freight waits in the stock room. No one is available to work all of this freight, so there is no telling when it will get done.

Centrella keeps working to serve her customers. "I know we are in bad shape, but there are stores that are much worse than this one, so I am going to do my best for my customers and this store."
