[PHOTOSTORY 4: STRUGGLE] Savannah shelter home for animals in need of adopting

 By: Joshua Jones

The Humane Society for Greater Savannah, located at 7215 Sallie Mood Drive, is home to dogs, cats and other animals that are stray, mistreated or abandoned.  There is also a thrift store located on the second floor of the HSGS building, which accepts donations such as clothing, shoes, toys and appliances, according to their website.

Adoptions Manager Nina Schulze answers a phone call on Saturday, June 12, at the HSGS in Savannah, Georgia.  The HSGS offers adoption, fostering, training and volunteer programs, among other various services.

Kevin and Lou Mari Ebuen browse the dogs available for adoption at the HSGS.  Patrons are allowed to interact with the animals they wish to adopt in order to find a good fit for owner and pet alike.

Rachel Jibilian, an employee of the HSGS, holds Sonny the dog as she interacts with a patron wishing to adopt.  Sonny, a 5-year-old Terrier mix, was taken into the shelter on June 10, 2021.

Rachel Jibilian offers Luna a treat to sit in one of the dog pens.  Luna, a 9-month-old mixed breed taken in on June 2, 2021, is available for adoption at a cost of $150.

Rachel Jibilian plays tug of war with Farrah, a 2-year-old mixed breed.  Farrah has been returned to the HSGS three times, according to Jibilian, who says the dog would do best being the only pet in a home.

Farrah pants as she relaxes in a water bucket on a hot day.  "Farrah also loves the water, so on a warm day don't be surprised if she shows off her swimming skills," reads the description of Farrah on the HSGS' website.

Rachel Jibilian radios to other employees at the HSGS.  "I like making the dogs' day," said Jibilian on her favorite part of the job. "A lot of them don't want to be here, but when I give them toys or if I take them outside to play, they just seem so happy."

Ethan Mathews, an employee of the HSGS, takes 5-year-old mixed breed Ace outside to use the bathroom.  "It's definitely a job that has immediate gratification, seeing the effect that you're having on their lives and on the community, so it does feel really good and those pros definitely outweigh the cons of when they first come in here," said Mathews on seeing positive changes in dogs at the shelter.

Ethan Mathews pets Molly, a 3-year-old Terrier and American Pit Bull mix.  Mathews said that Molly, who was taken in on June 1, 2021, tested positive for heartworms.

Max, a 3-year-old Terrier and American Pit Bull mix, watches as patrons pass by his window.  "Max only needs the right place to hang his hat to make his life complete," reads his description on the adoption website.

From left, Rachel Jibilian and volunteer Grace Swanner sort through donations to the HSGS' thrift store.  The thrift store is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Monday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

Stephanie Greene (right), HSGS' senior animal care tech, speaks with a patron looking to adopt a cat from the shelter.  Everyone was required to sanitize their hands between handling each cat.

From left, Connor Chu talks with customers about adopting a kitten.  There are currently 37 cats up for adoption at the HSGS, according to their website.

From left, Stephanie Greene gestures to a cat kennel while instructing volunteer trainee Hannah Lowry.  Volunteers are expected to commit to six hours a month for at least six months.

Hannah Lowry plays with a kitten through the door to its kennel.  "I just really love cats," said Lowry. "I love being able to hang out with them and socialize with them, and obviously helping out with customers so cats can get adopted."

Connor Chu explains the different tiers of cats at the shelter to a trainee.  Kittens can be adopted for $75, adult cats for $50 and senior cats for $35.

Sarah Handy administers a dose of de-wormer to one of the kittens at the shelter.  The cost of adoption covers this service as well as various other medical expenses, such as spaying and neutering, feline health tests and vaccinations.

Sarah Handy takes a kitten's weight inside the cat room of the HSGS.  Patrons can go into the "Kitten Room" to interact with the young cats up for adoption.

From left, kittens Lilly and Flinchum cuddle as they take a nap.  The siblings were taken in on June 11, 2021, and are 1 month old.
