[PHOTOSTORY 4: STRUGGLE] Living with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Juanita Carroll is my neighbor. She was just diagnosed with Peripheral Artery Disease. This disease is making it hard to walk.

Juanita drinks her matcha from Starbucks every morning.
Juanita likes to drink matcha because it has many health benifits including lowering blood pressure and helping heart health.

Juanita reads her book after drinking her matcha.
Juanita enjoys reading because it takes her mind off of the things she can not control in life.
Juanita taking a moment to pray.
Juanita likes to pray throughout the day.

Juanita checks his presciption bottle to make sure she is taking the correct medicine.
Juanita has to take thyroid medicine on top of medicine for her disease.

Juanita tells me about what this medicine does for her and how it helps her.
Juanita told me this helps give her energy throughout the day.

Juanita takes her thyroid medicine with water.
Juanita says she tries to drink atleast 5 bottles of water a day. Juanita likes to stay hydrated.

Juanita takes lots of vitamins to help her function better throughout the day.

Juanita takes her many vitamins.
Juanita likes to do this in the morning before she moves around alot.


Juanita walks with her walker.
Juanita prefers the cane and crutches. Juanita says this walker does not fit through her doorways.

Juanita prepares to go down stairs. 
Juanita gets nervous when doing this but she usually has a caretaker near.

Juanita holds on to the side rail as she goes down the stairs.
Juanita says sometimes it feels like her legs are going to give out.





Juanita waters her plants in her yard.
Juanita likes to keep a daily routine.  Juanita says this helps her feel productive.

Juanita heads back up the steps and inside.
Juanita enjoys sitting on her porch when its not to hot out.

Juanita walks to her dining room with her cane.
Juanita prefers the cane over the walker.

Juanita gets ready to do some computer searching.
Juanita enjoys getting on Facebook and checking in on her friends and family.



Juanita looks on the computer for about 15 minutes.
Juanita enjoys a small time looking at a screen. Juanita says she prefers reading a book.

Juanita puts on her blood pressure monitor.
Juanita has always had blood pressure issues so she likes to check it daily.



Juanita waits for the results.
Juanita is happy with the results because her blood pressure is normal.


Juanita heads back over to her chair.
Juanita likes to move around as much as she can. Juanita hates being still.


Juanita relaxes in her chair.
Juanita says it will take her a while to get used to having a disease that makes it hard to walk but she knows that if she keeps pushing through, she can do anything. Juanita is 88 years old and this is her first serious health issue.
