[PHOTOSTORY 4: STRUGGLE] An Evening with Someone Visually Impaired and Hard of Hearing

By: Emily Potter

A lamp lights up the window of a brick duplex in the small town of Metter, Georgia. This is the home of local Shirley Davis.

A cheerful Davis smiles brightly for the picture. She is 86 with still a lot of youth still left in her.

Davis poses for the picture with her best furry-friend Trudy. Trudy is a 6-year-old dog who provides companionship to Davis.

A watchful Trudy stands guard at the glass-screened door. Davis has struggled with the lost of her sight and and hearing as she has gotten older with age, however, Trudy helps makes the days go by.

Davis tells one of her neighbors about the latest book she has been listening to. She tries to listen to podcasts because she can't read well anymore.

Trudy sits by Davis as she listens to her podcast on full volume. "Sorry for the the audio being so loud, it's just too hot to wear my hearing aids so I have it on full volume."

Trudy guards Davis on the couch. Everyday, the two of them will sit on the couch and listen to books or podcasts.

Two white doves and a glass Christmas tree decorate Davis living room cabinet. "I am not sure what exactly is on my cabinet, or where it all came from, but it adds something to the space."

Davis walks slowly into the living room after grabbing a treat for Trudy. Davis' caretaker has taught Trudy several tricks that Davis can easily repeat herself with her dog.

Trudy begs for the treat held above her head. "Beg Trudy, beg."

Davis feeds her dog her hard earned treat. "I can't really tell where she is so I hope she just takes it out my hand."

Davis, Trudy, and her neighbor Megan sit in the living room talking about school. Megan often comes over to visit Davis a few times a week when she is off of work.

Megan accepts a friendly handshake from Trudy. Trudy is well trained and friendly to all of Davis' visitors.

Trudy sits right beside Davis as she rocks in her chair. Trudy never leaves her side.

A picture hangs above Davis' living room side table. All of the decorations Davis has had for years and hasn't changed them since.

The living room lamp lights up a small floral dish. This is where Davis will place miscellaneous items.

Davis rocks in her chair. "I spend a lot of tie rocking in this chair. I even face it towards my door so I can watch the cars go by."

The neighbors are mowing their grass in the cool summer evenings. Davis' has several neighbors who often check in on her and take her to doctor appointments.

A leather chair sits comfortably in the corner of the living room. This is where Davis will sit and watch TV, even though she only sees figures.

A Christian devotional book sits as decoration on Davis' side table. This book hasn't been touched in years since she has started to loose her sight.
