[Photostory 4: Struggle] A Celebration of life

 by: Brandon Murray

Saturday morning was farewell a last goodbye to a beloved member of the church community. By afternoon, grief was replaced with celebration, as family and friends gathered to honor a life well lived and the person that will always be cherished.

As one soul is mourned, another dances freely into the world unaware of the loss just full of life. A 4 year old spins in joy, not knowing the gathering honors a life now passed, symbolizing the rhythm of coming and going.

Laughter mixed well with the music as loved ones danced in denim and pink, honoring a spirit that once brought them together. In a memory of their joy, a tribute to the one they lost but carry forever in their hearts.

Family filled the porch with familiar faces embracing each other greeting with a gentle reminder of their collective loss. As more arrived, the home filled with both pain and love welcoming arms ready to carry each other through the day.

"Surrounded by family and the comfort of shared plates, a quiet moment unfolds on the porch. In her father’s arms, the youngest watches the celebration still too young to understand the loss, yet held in the warmth of a legacy that continues through her.

Under the open garage, the scent of fried fish, chicken, and pasta salad filled the air giving everyone good comfort food to soothe the soul. Along with the cooking they have a DJ in the back keeping the vibe up.

So many came to honor the loved one lost that there weren’t enough seats to hold everyone. Plates were balanced in hands but it was all in good spirit as people reconnected with people they haven't seen in awhile.

Although the rain threatened to cancel the celebration, cars kept pulling into the driveway as the church family refused to let weather stop the gathering. While the grown-ups caught up and carried food inside, a little girl in pink sat outside unfazed by the weather sipping on her drink.

Laughter filled the driveway as the women tried to nail down a dance choreography, stepping in sync together. In that moment, joy became their own tribute a celebration of life and love to the one they all came to remember.

Inside the garage, church elders rocked in chairs while trays of foil-covered dishes filled the tables each feeding everyone at the event. As music played softly in the background, the DJ takes song requests trying to keep everyone in a positive mood.

The girls brought out a pink outfit matched with overalls and a pink hat for the celebration. Even in grief, she stays in high spirits standing strong for the one they came to remember.

Tucked behind the flowers a conversation flowed as people ate from plates and caught up with each other. The nature seemed to pause in wake of the gathering of hearts honoring someone that is now gone.

As he held his daughter close during the meal, her eyes scanned the room too young to understand why everyone is coming together “She may not remember her,” her father said, “but the way she prayed over her and always made her laugh in church that will always live in her spirit.”

On the porch, the older church members shared fond stories over plates of food. In their smile, you could feel the history and the love that built this close knit church family.

Loved ones gathered on the screened-in porch due to the rain sharing stories between bites and laughter. A woman cradled her little niece, rocking her gently as the buzz of conversation filled the room with a mix of different generations.

As the grown-ups share food and stories under the garage, a toddler in overalls dashes across the driveway full of energy . Even the rain couldn't stop everyone from coming together and having a good time.

A close up shot of a church elder praying over his meal. "I was soaking in everything meeting everyones kids and fellowshipping with the youth of the church."

A toddler in a straw hat reaches for his drink with a sausage in one hand, ready to refuel after hours of dancing and playing. "You can tell he's the star of the day it's nice seeing the little ones having so much fun despite the grim occasion."

This picture captures different members getting together and enjoying watermelon smiling through the uncertainty. Their smiles holding back tears and bringing comfort to those around them grieving.

Even in the sorrow of loss, the laughter of the youngest church members reminds everyone that joy of their bright tomorrow. "She may not understand everything just yet, but I know she feels the love and that’s what matters most."
