[PHOTOSTORY 3: MOTION] The Garage Fitness Classes

 By: Kyra Dorsey

The Garage at Statesboro offers a variety of both morning and evening fitness classes. Two of its most popular classes are the Stamina and GarageFit class, which are modeled after CrossFit-style workouts.

Andrew Byrd (right)  and Sean Gay (left) start their first exercise set on the bike. The workout started with a 15/12 bike interval, where participants cycled for one minute with the goal of burning 15 or 12 calories.

Zach Sapp (right) and Bryd (left) cross paths as Bryd walks to start the second set of exercises. After the 15/12, participants completed 15 box jump overs.

Brandi Bittner completes her 10th box jump over. She was one of the only participants that did not fall while completing their sets.

Scott Stantley performs the third exercise of the Stamina class. After the box jump over, participants completed 30 hand release push ups, meaning they are supposed to lift their hands off the ground at the bottom of each rep.

Ally Springer focuses on her foot work as she completes her reps. Gay did have a slight slip up in the back and missed one of his jumps but he bounced right back.

Byrd prepares to land his last rep. The men had to jump on a 24 inch box and the women used a 20 inch box.

Bittner cycles during another 15/12 bike interval. Participants had to complete four sets of each exercise every eight minutes.

Erica Scripture takes a quick break in between sets. Participants were encouraged to rest when needed.

Bittner (right) and Plysheltia Draytonleft) stretch after completing the class for the evening. In total, participants completed the full workout circuit around 7 times.

Drayton puts away her box after class is over. All the participants were required to carry their box back after they finished.

Christina Gipson, owner and instructor of The Garage, demonstrates a walking handstand. This was the start of the GarageFit evening class, and the participants were a little skeptical about doing the walking handstands.

Alfred Tanno (right) and Gipson (left) show the other two class participants how to properly do a barbell squat. Gipson reiterated how important it is to have a solid form so the participants would not injure themselves.

Tanno and other participants perform shoulder presses. After the demonstrations, participants completed as many presses as possible in 30-second intervals.

Gipson records Katelyn Walker performing an overhead squat. Gipson often takes a few short videos of class participants to share on The Garage’s Instagram page.

Pam Anglin begins jump roping for the next set of exercises. After the participants completed 10 overhead squats, they had to go straight into 30 seconds of jump rope.

Walker performs a wall walk, using the gym wall for support. After jump roping, the class participants had to do wall walks or essentially a handstand using the wall.

Walker finishes another wall walk rep. Participants were required to do each set of exercises until they completed 25 wall walks.

Class participants restart the circuit with overhead squats. Gipson was feeling nice and let them stop at 20 wall walks.

The timer counts down the final second of the workout. Participants had a one minute rest period between each set, which they took full advantage of.
