[PHOTOSTORY 4: STRUGGLE] First Time Living Alone

By: Abby Chosewood

Amunet Berry flips through her coupon books as she checks her mail. Amunet currently lives with one other roommate in her first apartment in Statesboro, Georgia.
Amunet Berry reads her mail closely to make sure she does not throw away anything important. "I check my mail a lot for bills, because I do not want to miss any payments," Berry said.

Amunet writes her to do list for the week in her planner to stay organized. Amunet works a part time job and is a student at Georgia Southern University.

Amunet spends most of her days working for her remote job. She has been working remotely since the pandemic started in March of 2020.
Amunt Berry types on her computer to get her work done for the day. Amunet works for a book revision service company.

Amunet focuses closely on her laptop screen while working. "My job pays for my rent, so I have to make sure I always get all my work done because I rely on my income," said Berry.

Amunet talks to her mom on the phone through her headphones. "When I get overwhelmed, I always talk to my mom," Amunet said.

Amunet adds dawn dish soap to her dirty dishes. Amunet makes it a priority to keep her apartment clean.

Amnuet soaks her dishes in soap and water before putting them in the dishwasher. Amunet bought all of her dishes from Walmart when she moved to Statesboro.

Amunet scrubs her dirty plate with soap. "Now that I live alone, it's my responsibility to clean up after myself," Amunet said.

Amunet Berry carries her clean towels after she removed them from the dryer. Amnuet shares the washer and dryer with her one other roommate.

Amunet removes her clean towels from the dryer. "Laundry is something I never did when I lived at home. My mom always did it for us," said Amunet.

Amunet makes her bed while cleaning her room. Amunet has a private bedroom and bathroom in her shared two bedroom, two bathroom apartment.

Amunet makes sure her comforter is nice and laid out across her bed. "When I get bored at my apartment, I clean," Berry said.

Amunet puts her pillow into her pillow case while making her bed. Amunet said her bedspread is from a store in her hometown of Jonesboro, Georgia.

Amunet props up her stuffed animal squirrel on her freshly made bed. "My mom gave me this [stuffed animal] and I like to keep it close when I get homesick," Amunet said.

Amunet pours vegetables into a pot on the stove, while cooking her dinner. The dining hall on campus where Amunet used to eat is closed during the summer.

Amunet Berry checks her kitchen cabinets for ingredients. Amunet did not even use a recipe to make her dinner.

Amunet seasons her beefless burger. "I am glad my mom taught me how to cook growing up, because it has come in handy ever since I moved out," said Amunet.

Amunet Berry waits for her burger to cook. "Being away from home gets lonely and stressful sometimes, but I have learned to be so much more independent on my own," Berry said.
