[PHOTOSTORY 2: MOTION] Summer Day Camp (YMCA football game)

 By: Javon Huynh

Campers participate in a “five-on-five” football game at the YMCA in Waycross, Georgia. To pick which team will go first, a football is thrown in the air and each team will pick whether the football lands on the spaces "the backside" or "laces" the front side.

At the YMCA, the kids have an option of picking various different sports during outside time and today was football - a top favorite for the summer day campers. Each team consists of five players at this day's game.

Mr Tyler Nipper, a YMCA summer camp counselor, plays quarterback for both teams. This practice allows the games to be played fairly.

In the first play of the game, team captain Derrick McBride (in black shirt) takes it all the way for a touchdown as his teammates support him. No tackling is allowed, only two hand touch is allowed.

Derrick’s breaks into celebration after scoring the first touchdown of the game. He has been going to the YMCA for two years and looks forward to the summer camp.

After the touchdown, Mr. Tyler throws the ball to the opposing team for a chance to score. Colten Powell and James Gilberson rush after the ball.

Mr.Tyler throws the ball to team captain Brayden Smith. Brayden stated before the game that he "would make sure he led his team to victory."

In the second drive of the game, Brayden makes the “play of the game” by catching a ball that bounced off of the back of Gavin Wainwright.  Luckily Gavin was not injured.

Brayden flexes his muscles after making a touchdown. His touchdown makes the score 7-7.

Derrick’s team goes out for another pass to try and get ahead. The YMCA has many different age groups, so during group sports they allow multiple ages to play.

Team captain Derrick rushed all the way for a touchdown to take the lead. Having a team captain allows the kids to take on a leadership role for their fellow campers.

Derrick looks proud that his team has taken the lead. He is thankful to his team for choosing him as captain.

Camper Lamarion Smith runs the ball through the opposing team. He is a part of Brayden’s team who tries to answer back with the score being 14-7.

Derrick tries to stop Lamarion, but is too late. Lamarion helps his team to tie the score making it 14-14.

Captain Brayden and teammate Lamarion celebrate Lamarion's touchdown. The boys have participated in the YMCA's summer camp for three years and eagerly look forward to playing football with each other every summer.

Denver Curry runs with the ball as the opposing team tries to take him down. He is a part of Derrick’s team hoping to break the tie.

Denver drop the ball causing a turnover. Moments later, the opposing team pushes him to the ground as he tries to recover the ball.

Denver was injured which resulted in a halt of the game. The score is still 14-14.

Both teams take a moment to check on Denver. They show sportsmanship as they wait to see if he is uninjured.

Brayden’s team stood tall after Denver's injury and wins 21-14. Brayden and his teammates are happy that he was able to deliver a victory.
